Chapter Eight

When they woke the following evening, they showered separately. Clay hated to admit things felt kind of awkward, but that’s exactly how he felt.

When Lyzol came out the shower after him, dressed in the clothes that Konstantin had brought them, the guy’s vacant stare found the wall above Clay’s head as he said, “Why didn’t you bind your soul to mine?”

So that’s it.

Clay breathed a sigh. “You don’t want to mate with me, Lyzol. I’m damaged goods.”

Lyzol rushed over to him and took him in his arms. “No one’s perfect, Clay. I was kicked out of my ex-legion because I refused to kill my son. I know you went rogue because you wanted to avenge your brother. Those aren’t bad qualities. They show our love.”

Clay fought hard against the urge to push the hound away. What Lyzol had said may have been true on his side, but not Clay’s. “Lyzol, I hardly knew my brother. By the time he was born, I was already over one hundred years old. For how much contact I had with him, he could have been the family fish, for all I cared. But even if I was capable of love, I’m a rogue, Lyzol. How could you want to spend your life with a rogue?”

Clay frowned when Lyzol laughed. “Clay, I live above a bar whose population is mainly rogues. Besides, it wouldn’t matter to me even if you were off your rocker. I would still want you.”

That wasn’t exactly reassuring. Clay knew he was no catch. “I…” he began. “I’m flattered, but I’m afraid I can’t mate with you.”

Lyzol snorted. “I’m afraid it’s too late for that, because we are already mated.”

“We’re not mated by demon standards,” Clay snapped. “Just because we exchanged blood willingly and had sex doesn’t mean we’re mated in heart. I’ll need more than that to feel safe enough to bind our souls.”

“Are you saying you want me to be in love with you before we tie life forces?”

Clay stilled. “Yeah. I guess that’s what I’m saying.”

Lyzol fell silent, so Clay walked around the room, gathering what little stuff he’d had on him when entering what Lyzol had told him was another bar like Hell’s Mouth called The Drop Zone. Going through the pockets of his old pants to get his wallet, Clay found the card Wade had given him.

Looking over at Lyzol, he realized the man couldn’t see him. Even so, he discreetly shoved the card in his new pants pocket.

“What’re you doing?” Lyzol asked.

Shocked by the abruptness of the question, Clay answered too quickly, “Nothing.”

Lyzol sighed. “Clay, when are you going to start being honest with me? I know more than you think I do.”

“Really, it’s nothing.”

“All right, if you say so.”

Together, they walked toward the door and exited the room. Clay had thought about staying at The Drop Zone, but he decided against it. He planned on returning to Hell’s Mouth with Lyzol. Given the whole Salem situation, he didn’t think he had much of a choice in the matter.
